Bob the spider and other tales of terror
So, if you're reading FADE OUT, you will encounter the character of Bob the spider. I like Bob. Bob is just ... cute.

Well, I now have my very own Bob the spider. Not that I keep him as a pet, no, it's more that Bob is a giiiiiinormous orb spider -- seriously, his BODY is bigger than most entire spiders I've ever seen -- who's set up shop in the bush next to my driveway. Bob ambitiously built a web that stretched halfway into the driveway, the first day; we discussed, I amended his design with a stick, and he bounced up and down in his web and was visibly upset by my edits.

But by golly, he's keeping his web in the appropriate placement now. Communication!

Every day when I leave for work, and come home from work, I say hello to Bob. Bob ignores me. It's a comfortable relationship.

Just thought I would share.

KISS OF DEATH rewrites are finished! Huzzah! As are page proofs for UNKNOWN. And speaking of UNKNOWN ... I'm going to have a giveaway in December for two copies of the bound galleys!

****

SO excited about the upcoming signings ... this Friday night at Legacy Books in Plano, Texas at 7 pm ... then at the Mystery Bookstore in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon ... then at Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego on Sunday!

Next Friday I'll be signing at the Borders Express in Exton, Pennsylvania, then Murder by the Book in Houston. (I'll also be stopping off in New York to film a segment for Penguin.com, and for Marianne Mancusi's show on BetterTV!)

****

Okay, now I really do have to go to work. Like, the actual job. So I hope all my LJ friends have a fantastic Wednesday!

Have a great trip travelling! So far, "Fade Out" is amazing by the way. I almost ignored my friends during dinner while reading it last night.

Though, I really wished that you were doing signings while in NYC rather than just tapings.

Hmm. The more-then-four-legged wildlife is a major reason't I'd never live in Texas. When I was working in PLano, I was terrified that a scorpion would somehow break into my hotel room. Yah, I'm excessively anxious about them.

But - more books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!

The funny thing is I've never seen a scorpion in the wild, although I even lived out in the desert. Only at exhibits (and once, when an ex-roommate thought it would make a cool pet, which SO NOT).

LOL! My logical mind knows this. It also knows that even if there was a scorpoin around it wouldn't be interested in me except to avoid my feet. But my lizard brain isn't listening. I can't even be in a petstore that has them in aquariums.

As for your ex-roommate - SO NOT indeed! Waaah!

I have one of those little guys in my car.... can't find him but he is very busy at night. I think he is trying to figure out how to navigate the steering wheel, because it seems to be where the main concentration of webbing lands....:)

I am with you in giant orb weaver spider joy. We've got two: Tilly lives on our pack porch, and I watch her spin her web, eat bad things so they don't come into my house when we open the back door, and then take down her web in the morning.

Shelob was slightly less courteous, and spun her web ambitiously across our front door. She has since been relocated to the trees next to the front door, where I eye her suspiciously whenever I'm around at night.

You know a spider's stroppy when you have to name it "Shelob." Wow.

Bob -- like his namesake -- seems to be getting bigger by the day. Yikes.

I am actually not sure who is bigger, Tilly or Shelob. At first, I thought Shelob, but I think any spider would look monstrous when it's spun a web big enough to catch you across your front door.

But Tilly (short for Matilda, because Charlotte is cliche) is ginormous. We have a perfect view of her out our back window, and she terrifies and fascinates me in equal parts. I think my favorite thing about orbweavers is that they take their web down every morning and rebuild it every night. Fascinating!

I wonder why we humans have such a visceral fear of spiders?

Coming home from class one night I walked face-first (it was dark and I was texting while walking...bad idea!!) into a ginormous amount of webbing strewn from the back of my apt building to the trees behind it (quite a distance!!). HUGE spider was left hanging from my hair...I managed not to do anything but calmly say "holy crap" and then carefully removed it and placed it on the ground. No more texting while walking in the dark for me!!
I'm not a fan of spiders but I can deal with those. I have really big centipedes tho in my apt cuz they come up from the basement and those are really icky...ugh.

Thanks for speaking up, and I do hope you like the next one better.

My only complaint was really really wanting to punch Kim throughout the book. But I think that sorta fits with the character so maybe that's a good thing?? Can't wait for the next one already!!!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to sound harsh or anything. I'm going to read Fade Out again and write down some notes on it. They're just my thoughts on the book (also in comparison to the other books in the series). I'd like to email them to you, but I'm busy with school at the moment, so it might take a little while before I can. If that's okay.

For the record; I love your books. You're an amazing writer :)

It's perfectly fine, please, don't worry! I just always like to listen to people have problems with the story -- maybe it's something I meant, maybe it's something I didn't mean and didn't realize would bother people, maybe it's a choice that's just personal ... but it's always illuminating to me. So if you can, when you get a chance, that would be wonderful, but no rush.

I thank you very much. :)

I just looked up orb-weavers and realized that's the kind of spider that likes to build webs all over the railings at the water treatement plant and waste treatment plant. (We had to go visit both places for environmental biology class this semester.)

I remember looking at the webs and thinking 'wow! they're so pretty! I wish I'd brought my camera!' It was early morning so there was dew on the webs and the light was shining nicely. I only saw maybe 2 of the actual spiders but it was definitely and orb-weaver.

Also after reading Fade Out whenever I see a spider I shall name him Bob. I work in a food store and occasionally we'll find a grasshopper or something under a register in the deep dark corners of the bottom shelves. I always save the poor creature from my shrieking co-workers and try and let it outside. I don't know whether it's a comfort to know Myrnin saved a spider like me or if it should be worrisome. lol
